San Bernardo Fort

A bit of history and charm

Fort San Bernardo is located on the island of Tierra Bomba. It was built in the seventeenth century with the Fort San Jose to protect Cartagena from pirates and control the entry of merchant ships. For some time it was also used as a prison due to their inaccessibility and great security. Tierra Bomba is now a fishing village and has a variety of beaches, restaurants and places to buy souvenirs.

Things to do in Fort San Fernando and Tierra Bomba

In the Fort San Fernando you can learn about the history behind the balwarts in the Northern front, known as King and Queen. There you can find a wide variety of old cannons, cisterns, awnings and watchtowers made of stone.

From there, you can enjoy a stunning sight of Tierra Bomba island. Nearby, you will find El Horno hill, where is located the Battery Angel San Rafael. It is surrounded by a dry ditch and other buildings from the colonial times.

Up there you will find an underground tunnel connected with the Battery of Santa Barbara, another historical spot that is worth visiting.

Beyond the old buildings, there are plenty of beaches in Tierra Bomba, such as Palmarito and Playa Linda, two amazing places to rest and swim in the pristine sea waters. You can also tour all over the island and enjoy its excellent food and drinks.
